Tonic is one of Britain's favourite drinks and has a long and complex history. It was born in the mid 1800's when colonialists in India would drink tonic water infused heavily with quinine - an extract that was believed to cure and prevent malaria. This early tonic water was quite unpalatable, sugar and ice, sipping perfection was achieved. Scurvy was also a problem at that time so the addition of a slice of lime or lemon would make the drink even more health giving.
